Perry was born in Chicago to two actors Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. Her first TV roles were two appearances on the show as Jackie Harris (as seen in flashback) on the ABC sitcom Roseanne which was played by her mom. Her parents, however, did not let her perform until she was an adult, for fear of the impact stress might be able to have on their daughter. Perry says she didn't want to perform in high school but decided to take up playing as a way to make friends while at Northwestern University when she switched from Boston University. Perry left for New York, where she was offered small roles in shows like Law & Order: Criminal Intent. The feeling of homesickness led Perry home to California, where theater jobs were available. She performed on Broadway as a part of The Other Place with her mother in the year 2013. In 2015, she was a part of her father and Kevin McKidd in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize-winning play Anna Christie at the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble in West Los Angeles. Perry played a part in nine episodes of ABC's thriller The Family during 2016. Her father portrayed her in her role on the ABC show Scandal. She also played her young Mary Cooper in Young Sheldon which was a CBS spin-off of The Big Bang Theory. She was cast in the role by auditioning for an open role despite being a fan of this character.
